The Compass School is a high-performing K-8 public charter school with a dual mission of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Founded in 2002, we offer a tuition-free education through an annual statewide lottery. Located on a 20-acre historic farm just a mile from the state university, our campus features Rhode Island’s largest school garden, complete with farm animals and nearly 5,000 square feet of above-ground garden beds. Recognized as a model program with international acclaim, Compass has been invited twice—in 2018 and 2024—to represent sustainable education at the International Green Leadership Summit in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly. We are recognized by The U.S. Department of Education as a National Green Ribbon School for our commitment to sustainability through composting, reusable items, and waste reduction practices. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, we rely on public funding to sustain our mission-driven programs, facilities, and maintenance.
