Nestled on a scenic 20-acre historic farm just a mile from the state university, The Compass School offers an immersive learning environment that blends sustainability, agriculture, and innovation. Home to Rhode Island’s largest school garden, our campus boasts nearly 5,000 square feet of above-ground garden beds, a greenhouse, a high tunnel, and a vibrant farm that includes chickens and other animals such as goats, sheep, and calves, made possible through our seasonal host husbandry program.

Surrounded by stone walls, tree-lined fields, and hiking trails, our historic farmhouse, main schoolhouse and newly renovated middle school barn serve as dynamic learning spaces. The barn showcases 21st-century sustainability, integrating photovoltaics, a rainwater harvesting system, energy-efficient windows, and a thermal building envelope. These features not only reduce our environmental impact but also serve as hands-on educational tools for students and visitors.

Our outdoor amphitheater provides a shaded, open-air gathering space ideal for outdoor instruction, guest speakers, student performances, and community events. Each class step has its own outdoor learning space under shaded sails, fostering hands-on exploration and engagement in a natural setting. Additionally, our outdoor pavilion offers a versatile covered area for group activities and lessons. With our entire campus serving as an outdoor classroom, Compass cultivates deep connections to nature, sustainability, and experiential learning for all who visit.
