Admission by Lottery

The Compass School is a public K-8th grade charter school and in accordance with our charter, enrollment is through a lottery which is open to all RI residents. Any applicant not chosen is retained on the waiting list, which will not roll over from year to year. Applications are available for electronic submission.

The 2023-24 Charter School Common Application was available from November 22, 2022 through March 16, 2023 and the lottery was run on Monday, April 3, 2023. Families have already been notified of the results.

The Compass School participates in EnrollRI, a Common Application for all charter schools.

EnrollRI was launched to ensure that access to Rhode Island Department of Education schools and programs remains easy, safe, and accessible for all families.

Enrollment in a charter public school is nonselective and conducted by random lottery. Participating charter schools will share a common application for the 2023-2024 school application process.

Application Timeline

Use the Family Information Tool (FIT) to find the school(s) that meets the performance, accessibility, and programmatic targets you are seeking. Next, use the EnrollRI Common Application to apply to any participating charter schools you are interested in and for which your child is eligible to attend. Participating charter schools will hold their 2022-2023 admissions lotteries on April 3 or after and will communicate your student’s enrollment status soon after that time.

Open House

The Compass School is excited to announce our Open House on Saturday, March 4, 2023.

This is a great opportunity for prospective parents to tour The Compass School, meet our Director, and learn more about the lottery process.

We are offering Saturday sessions as follows:

1:00 – 2:00 pm: Prospective Families with students entering K-4th grade
2:00 – 3:00 pm: Prospective Families with students entering 5th – 8th grade
If a family has prospective students in both age ranges, please attend the 2:00 – 3:00 session.

Please dress and wear footwear that is suitable for the weather; the program will include a tour of the campus.

We encourage prospective students in 3rd – 8th grade to attend the Open House along with their families.

For students entering K-2nd grade, we find that families can focus on the details best if the parents attend without their K-2nd grade children as the presentation is not geared toward early childhood.

Note that ALL accepted students (K-8) and their families will be invited to Compass for an Accepted Families program in the Spring.
